This black porcelain jar was thrown on the potter's wheel. While the black porcelain was still wet and spinning slowly, I carved into the outside with a finely grooved tool, painted on a blue porcelain slip and then scraped it smooth, revealing a lined pattern. I hand-carved the pattern at the leather-hard stage and painted blue-green underglaze into the cuts. Once the piece was bisque-fired, I applied a red high-fire glaze to the inside and a clear gloss high-fire glaze to the outside.
